TUCSON, A.Z. – Ten people were injured and a suspect remains in critical condition following an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning near downtown Tucson, according to the Tucson Police Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of Congress Street and 6th Avenue, where officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots.
According to investigators, officers encountered a man fleeing the area as they arrived at the scene. Police said officers issued multiple commands to the individual before one officer discharged a department-issued firearm, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately took the suspect into custody and rendered emergency medical aid before he was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.
Authorities said the officer-involved shooting occurred after several individuals had already been wounded during an earlier exchange of gunfire. Investigators believe the initial shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups who were known to one another. During the exchange, multiple bystanders were struck by gunfire.
Police reported that ten victims sustained gunshot wounds, with most injuries affecting the arms and legs. Officers provided life-saving medical assistance until crews from Tucson Fire Department arrived and transported the victims to area hospitals for further treatment. Officials have not released updated information regarding the conditions of the injured victims.
No Tucson police officers were injured during the incident.
The Tucson Police Department continues to investigate both the initial shooting and the subsequent officer-involved shooting. As the investigation remains active, several roads in the downtown area remain closed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the scene has been cleared.
