MOSCOW/KYIV (AP) – At least nine people were killed and more than a dozen others injured overnight after Russia and Ukraine exchanged large-scale drone and missile attacks, with Ukrainian drones striking a warehouse south of Moscow and Russian forces launching deadly attacks across several Ukrainian cities.
Russian officials said at least five people were killed and 10 others injured when a Ukrainian drone struck an industrial warehouse near Moscow early Tuesday morning.
Moscow region Gov. Andrei Vorobyov said the attack targeted an industrial site in the community of Novoselki, near Chekhov, approximately 43 miles (69 kilometers) south of the Kremlin. The strike sparked a large fire at the warehouse.
Vorobyov said seven of the injured remained hospitalized in moderate condition, while one person was listed in serious condition. Authorities have not publicly identified the victims or specified what was stored inside the warehouse.
Ukrainian media reported the facility was associated with Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest online retailers, often referred to as the “Russian Amazon.” Ukrainian officials have repeatedly claimed that several Wildberries logistics centers are being used to support Russia’s military supply chain, allegations that Moscow has denied.
Regional officials also reported drone strikes targeting Wildberries warehouse facilities in the St. Petersburg and Tver regions overnight. Wildberries has not publicly commented on the Moscow-area strike but confirmed that one of its facilities in St. Petersburg sustained damage.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 320 Ukrainian drones during the overnight assault, one of the largest reported drone attacks in recent months.
Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a series of strikes across Ukraine that killed at least four civilians and wounded several others, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
In the southern port city of Mykolaiv, officials said an 89-year-old woman was killed when Russian strikes hit residential areas overnight. Seven others were injured, including two girls, age 2 and 12.
In northeastern Sumy, a woman and two young girls, ages 5 and 10, were killed after a residential neighborhood came under attack. Four additional people were injured.
Elsewhere, emergency officials said two people were wounded in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, while a food warehouse caught fire following a strike in the central city of Dnipro.
The latest attacks underscore the continued escalation of long-range strikes by both Russia and Ukraine as the war enters another year with no indication that hostilities are easing. Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted infrastructure and logistics facilities deep inside Russian territory, while Moscow continues near-daily missile and drone attacks against cities and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
Both nations have repeatedly accused each other of targeting civilian infrastructure, while maintaining that their military operations are directed at strategic objectives.
