GLEN ALPINE, N.C. – Authorities have identified both victims whose remains were discovered during an ongoing homicide investigation near the nature trail at 618 Hennessee Street in Glen Alpine.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office announced that the remains discovered on July 21, 2026, have been positively identified as 31-year-old Raheim McClain Murray of 2499 NC 18 US 64, Morganton.
Investigators also confirmed that the remains discovered on July 25, 2026, have been identified as 39-year-old Carla Janon Murray, also of 2499 NC 18 US 64, Morganton. Officials stated that next of kin have been notified.
The investigation began on July 20, 2026, when the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded alongside the Glen Alpine Police Department after receiving a report of suspicious circumstances near the nature trail on Hennessee Street.
Only July 21, investigators, assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), located the first set of human remains. Detectives with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and SBI agents immediately launched a joint homicide investigation.
As the investigation progressed, authorities obtained arrest warrants on July 25 charging Jamar Quarmaine Propst and Tosha Lee Lewis with First-Degree Murder and Felony Conspiracy. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident during the early morning hours of July 25.
Later that same day, investigators located a second set of human remains near the same nature trail. The SBI again assisted in processing the crime scene, and additional warrants were issued charging both Propst and Lewis with a second count of First-Degree Murder and Felony Conspiracy in connection with the second victim.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths, citing the ongoing investigation.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
